MOVIE SYNOPSIS:
Wealthy Jonathan Reynolds is close to death. He’s not expected to last the night and the newspapers are ready to roll with the story of his passing. His only son, Johnny is rushing to his bedside from Mexico. On his arrival, Reynolds asks Johnny to bring to him the girl he is engaged to so he can see her before he dies. So Johnny rushes off to the hotel where his fiancée, Gloria Pennington and her mother are staying. Unable to find them he asks a beautiful hatcheck girl, Anne Terry to pose as his fiancée for the sum of fifty dollars to which she agrees. When they arrive at the house, Reynolds takes an instant liking to her. After the meeting, Anne tells Johnny that she is going back home to Ohio and that the fifty dollars will come in handy. Much to everyone’s surprise, Reynolds recovers and insists that Johnny’s fiancée join him for breakfast. Johnny rushes off to the train station and catches Anne just in time. She once again agrees to pose as his fiancée. On their arrival, Reynolds gives Anne the family jewels and his affection for her continues to grow. When the family physician, Doctor Harvey brings in the get well cards and letters, Anne is excited to learn that one of the cards is from the famous conductor Leopold Stokowski who is a frequent visitor to the house. Anne wants to audition for Stokowski and after singing to Reynolds she convinces him to throw a party for her and invite Stokowski. Gloria and her mother want to be formally introduced to Reynolds, so Johnny tells Anne that it’s time to tell his father the truth. Anne is against the idea because it will ruin her chances with Stokowski. Johnny comes up with a story to tell his father that the engagement is off because he and his fiancée have had a bad argument. As Johnny is telling his father about the cancelled engagement, Anne rushes in begging him to forgive her. When Reynolds leaves the room, Johnny chases Anne around the house and threatens to punch her. Reynolds overhears their conversation and learns that Anne is not Johnny’s fiancée after all, but decides not to let on that he knows. Then Gloria and her mother arrive under a different name and are introduced to Reynolds who doesn’t show any interest in them. Gloria is upset with Johnny for not telling his father that she is the real fiancée. That same night Anne tries to tell Reynolds that she is a fake, but he pretends to be sick and stops her from confessing. On the night of the party, Anne phones Reynolds and informs him she has a headache and won’t be coming. Reynolds visits Anne at her apartment and tells her he knows that she isn’t really his son’s fiancée. He then convinces Anne to go to a nightclub where they laugh and dance. When Johnny finds out what his father has done, he rushes to the nightclub and confronts Anne who throws a drink in his face. The next day Anne is at the railway station again heading for Ohio, but once again Johnny convinces her to see his father because he is close to death. When they arrive at the mansion, they discover that Doctor Harvey is the one who is sick and not Reynolds. Johnny is informed by Reynolds that Gloria and her mother have gone to Mexico. Anne and Johnny then accept the fact that they are in love much to the satisfaction of Reynolds.

This is a photo of Robert Cummings celebrating his birthday (10 June) during the making of IT STARTED WITH EVE. There are three candles on his cake in recognition that he was the first leading man to work in three movies with Deanna Durbin. Later, Charles Laughton also celebrated his birthday (1 July) on the set of IT STARTED WITH EVE:

IT STARTED WITH EVE was Deanna's first movie after her marriage to Vaughn Paul and she didn't want to take her wedding ring off, so she simply concealed it with a larger ring.

Although Deanna gave a brilliant performance in IT STARTED WITH EVE, her mind was preoccupied on decorating her new house in Brentwood rather than making a movie.

Deanna and Vaughn had just spent a weekend at the home of Robert and Vivien Cummings. Deanna was so sore from laughing that she couldn't sing when she arrived at the studio for work on Monday.

Deanna Durbin's graceful stunt of jumping on a chair and gliding over as it overturns was accomplished with a basic ballet step she learned while taking dancing lessons before she began her movie career.

The filming of the scene after Robert Cummings and Deanna Durbin had visited Charles Laughton on his death bed has a fun story attached to it. Deanna and Robert were fooling around as usual. As Robert was giving thanks at the bottom of the stairs to Deanna for posing as his fiancée, he spoke only into her left eye which made her nervious. "I can't stand the way he looks at me," she snickered. "It makes me feel sort of one-sided." Robert was pleased with himself, but feigned innocence. He promised to gaze into both Deanna's eyes. The scene began again. As he spoke his murmured, emotional lines, half of Deanna's face looked at him with wistful tenderness. The other half, unseen by the camera, gradually distorted into a disconcerting grimace and then a twitching sneer, but subsided with a smirk when Robert giggled. Both actors then played the scene again properly when they sensed Henry Koster losing his patience with them.

Mistake found in the movie:

When Anne first arrives at the Reynold's mansion, she is wearing a raincoat, and one of the lapels is crooked, but when Johnny is thanking her at the bottom of the stairs for coming to see his father, the lapel suddenly becomes completely straight.

A complete wardrobe of oversized clothes were tailored for Charles Laughton to make it appear he had lost a lot of weight due to an illness. He in fact did lose a massive 40 pounds in a few weeks prior to the making of IT STARTED WITH EVE.

We all know that in the movie IT STARTED WITH EVE, old Jonathan Reynolds has a penchant for music. Notice that shortly after the jewelllery box scene, Anne Terry thunders out the opening bars of Tchaikovsky's B flat piano concerto and then sings When I Sing to the music of the Sleeping Beauty Waltz. And what is the combination of the wall safe? 18.12, of course!!
