A shrewd salesman named Mitchell Hamilburg got interested in Deanna Durbin when he saw a preview of her 1936 debut movie called THREE SMART GIRLS. He was the Los Angeles representative of the Touraine Company, a New York sportswear house, and he figured Deanna would be good for a line of trademarked children’s dresses. When Touraine rejected the idea, he signed a personal agreement with Deanna's father James Durbin and threw away his job. For a variable down payment and 5 percent of the wholesale gross, he licensed the Deanna Durbin trademark to eleven different manufacturers. Cotton dresses made by Roseneau of Philadelphia and silk dresses made by Teen Frocks of New York had a retail sale of about a million dollars. Sportswear (made by Touraine), pajamas, robes, hats, bags, dolls, records, songbooks, and music retailed for another million.
